"twist in the wind" as a frame for Iraq

Fri May 25, 2007 at 09:49:45 AM PDT

I was thinking yesterday exactly why we lost this debate and it fundamentally comes down to framing.  Republicans have created the frame and Democrats have fed into it that our soldiers will be in the middle of battle and just run out of bullets.  You can imagine a soldier reaching back to reload his gun and the box of ammo just being empty.  That simple frame has been pounded over and over again.
We will lose this debate every time unless we change the frame.  We will lose it in September, we will lose it next January or whenever the next funding request comes after that, we will lose every time unless we change this frame.

Let me suggest a different frame that might be effective and even is four words so it can be repeated over and over again for the ADD media.

"Twist in the wind"

more..

Bush is letting our soldiers twist in the wind.  Congressman X voted to let our soldiers twist in the wind.  Our soldiers are twisting in the wind in Iraq.

It gives the idea of the flag (patriotism) that is twisting in the wind, that is in a storm but it is twisting and it needs to be secured but George is on the ground doing nothing.

These are the types of images Republicans have used for this entire war. Cutting and running, Cutting off the funding. Cutting off the troops.  These all try to create the idea of abandonment.  We use logic while Republicans use emotion and guess which one won.

We must start creating the same emotional images in the publics mind for our side of this debate.  If we don't our soldiers will never be coming home and it will be our fault.
