It occurred to me that if Kerry wins the nomination and offers the VP slot to Edwards (the former considerably more likely than the latter), Edwards is going to face a real dilemma.
He can decline the nod, with the downside of losing a shot at the vice-presidency and slipping into the political ether, never to be seen again.
But perhaps more damaging, he can take the nod only to either:
a.) Lose, and be blamed for not carrying any southern states and slipping back into the political ether, never to be seen again, when the guy to blame is at the top of the ticket.
b.) Win, and be stymied by a one-term Kerry presidency, ultimately slipping into the political ether, never to be seen again.
Am I assuming a lot, particularly about Kerry being a one-termer? Hell yes. But if I weren't, then this wouldn't be called a diary, would it?
There are about a million more possible implications and permutations here that I haven't bothered to consider yet, but it does strike me that John Edwards is going to have a very difficult decision on his hands should he be offered the vice-presidency.
Personally, I'm not sure Kerry's a wagon I'd want to hitch my horse to. But I'd sure hate to be wrong about that.
