UPDATE - You might be a redneck...

Sat May 05, 2007 at 07:31:01 PM PDT

... if you can believe that during a time of war a studio has the bad taste to release a comedy about a bunch of misfit Army reservists assigned to serve in Iraq, but instead, through a series of mishaps, actually ends up crash landing Mexico thinking it's Iraq - called Delta Farce.

So if you thought anyone was taking the sacrifice of our soldiers and reservists seriously - think again.

For whatever feelings people here have about this war - I think the least we can offer our troops is that we not mock their service or what they've gone through or are going through.

And people can say "oh, it's just a movie; it's just a harmless comedy" but I think "Delta Farce" is more emblematic of how detached we as Americans are overall re: the experiences our Armed Forces have to come to grips with on a daily basis.

Larry the Cable Guy might go over to Iraq and visit the troops or do some other stuff to "support the troops;" I don't know.  I haven't researched if he does or doesn't do that type of stuff.  It doesn't matter.  There's some stuff you just can't do.  You don't make a cheap joke about military service in a time of war - and even go so far as to mention "Iraq" in the trailer.

I have a close family friend serving in the Army Reserves as a captain over in Iraq.  He was home recently on leave and from what I've heard from those who saw him he was extremely affected - negatively - by his service thus far.  He puts his life at risk every day.  I just can't come to terms with him having to get up every day and do this mission while Mr. "Git-R-Done" is living fat and happy and feeling this is somehow right and proper humor.

As with our "Support the Troops" bumper magnet culture - we sacrifice so very little in our daily lives as this war goes on.  We give money to causes - it's easy to do on the Internet.  Do we march on Washington?  Can we really force the press to do their jobs more effectively?  Even with all the great reporting I see on blogs - where is the big wake-up call that forces news organizations to challenge the lines of bullshit spouted every day by ventriliquist dummies like Tony Snow, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Dana Perino, Dan Bartlett, Mary Matalin, etc...?

Color me more than a bit disenchanted as to how this all turns out.

UPDATE: This film opens May 11th.
