James Risser wrote about Monica Goodling's breakdown in David Margolis' office -- sobbing for 45 minutes relating her fears she would have to quit.
Well, MAYBE, she was also just a bit worried that the Justice Dept would investigate whether she improperly assessed the political loyalties of applicants for career assistant U.S. attorney posts.
Two government officials (not ID'd when talking about an ongoing probe) told NEWSWEEK the inquiry began after Jeff Taylor, the interim U.S. attorney in D.C., complained that Goodling tried to block the hiring of a prosecutor in his office for being a "liberal Democratic type."
Damn those liberal Democratic types. They just cause nothing but trouble. When Monica Goodling first invoked her 5th amendment right, I really thought she was just being a paranoid right-wing conservative. I wanted her to testify because I thought she could shine a lot of light on Alberto Gonzales' "activities". Now I see that she probably had good reason to not incriminate herself.
