The NYT article about the Clarke story ends with this:
Mr. Clarke's book also accuses the Clinton administration of having done too little to fight the threat of Al Qaeda. But he attributes this to the fact that Mr. Clinton had been "weakened by continuing political attack" stemming from his involvement with a White House intern and by other scandals.
I've always wondered how much it had damaged our country to have the entire government consumed in the Lewinsky scandal, and the President so weakened by it. Now we can wonder whether the Republicans' selfish push of the Lewinsky scandal may well have brought this country a monumental cost.
Could it be that, without the Limbaughs of the world, and with a more responsible Senate leadership, Clinton could have prevented 9/11? Like so may things, we will never know.
