Unitarian Universalist GA Open Thread

Thu Jun 21, 2007 at 07:55:55 AM PDT

We seem to have a high number of UU's posting on Daily KOS, so I have decided to post an open thread to discuss happenings at General Assembly.  If you are not in Portland, some of the sessions are streamed at the URL for live streaming video

What is GA, you may ask, and why should I care?

GA is the annual meeting where congregations conduct the business of the Association.  But there is so much more, from worship to workshops.

Workshops and lectures include Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry's discussing socially responsible investing, Barry Lynn of AU and Welton Gaddy of the Interfaith Alliance talking about the "First Freedom First" program.  Learn about Sundown Towns, Racial reconciliation, and a new bisexuality adult religious education curriculum.  There is truly something for everyone.

Last night, at worship, the leaders talked about some of our "Choices that mattered".  Three resolutions, seeking equality for women, accessibility for everyone regardless of physical ability, and justice and full inclusion for all people regardless of racial or ethnic identity.   These resolutions are not an end but a sense of the direction we wanted to go.  To me, it was a public articulation of a choice, a public commitment to that choice, and more importantly a commitment to an endeavor.  The endeavor is to help bend the arc of the universe toward justice, and it's something we can do better together.

Comments?  Experiences?  A place to share notes or impressions from workshops?  Join us in the comments ... I am walking out to the morning session but will check in from time to time during the day.
