London Police Defuse Car Bomb in Busy Theater District
Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 06:49:48 AM PDT
Breaking on MSNBC. People called in a "suspicious car" near the Theater district around 2am. Turns out the car was laden with fuel, gas cyclinders, nails, etc.
Gordon Brown has called an emergency meeting of the Government. What a first day on the job.
British Home Secretary is calling it "international terrorism".
I'll update as more information becomes available.
So many of raids in the past have been based on suspect information, but this appears to be the real deal and I, for one, am incredibly thankful that a tragedy has been averted.
UPDATE: Park Lane at Hyde Park/Marble Arch is completely closed off as they continue to investigate. Apparently this is a 2nd "suspicious vehicle" that is parked near where the Princess Diana memorial concert is to take place this weekend and about 30 blocks from the car they found last night. Park Lane is a major London street.
UPDATE #2 London Police say the car bomb was set to be detonated by cell phone. They say there are strong comparisons to the IED style often seen in Iraq.
UPDATE #3: They are now investigating a 3rd car near the financial district.
UPDATE #4: Explosives found in the "2nd car" in the Hyde Park area.
