Filibuster -- This Better Not Be for Show

Mon Jul 16, 2007 at 06:20:36 PM PDT

I'm a lurker, not a regular poster here.  However, the news that Democrats in the Senate plan to force a filibuster on the Iraq vote compels me to write with a simple request of my Democratic leaders:

Don't do me in favors here.  Either go all in, or don't waste my time.

I was beyond infurated when the Congress folded on the previous defense authorization bill -- when they gave up the fight as soon as the bill was vetoed.

I (we) sent you there to fight.  Iraq is the issue, and the time is now.

Don't put on a little 24 hour filibuster show to make me feel better.  Get the fucking job done.

If you are not prepared to keep that debate open for hours, days on end until the whole world understands the score, then don't waste my time.

The ideal outcome is breaking the filibuster.

I understand they may not be able to accomplish this.

I'll settle for days of debate.  Days of dominating the national discourse about how the GOP won't let the Congress enact the will of the people.  Days of educating the country about where we really stand on the issue of the day.

If you can't stand the heat, if you can't fight this battle for real, if you can't do anything more than a symbolic gesture, then don't waste my time.

But if you are ready to fight, and fight to the end, then I only have three words to say:

Bring. It. On.
