Ok time to test my kung fu for the first time, true believers. After many months of reading this wonderful blog are correct (plus all those years of righteous schoolin') in order to assert power, influence, whatever, in the cultural landscape we must change the shape of the cultural landscape.
What does this have to do with the title? Have some patience kid and read on.
Funny--not Holy Grail Funny but Clerks Funny--that the literal landscape has been in a constant state of flux. Hurricanes kill. War kills. But the men and women employed in Operation Vietnam, that dazzling cinematic display of raging ass sex (no lube) and guerrilla warfare, are the very same men and women we needed to do good back on the homefront. Everyone, at least everyone here in the KOSmos, agrees that the deployment of the National Guard to Iraq dramatically affected the response to Katrina and will prolly affect that to Rita too.
Now, the relationship between Katrina and Global Warming is clear: The increase and severity of hurricanes is a manifestation of Global Warming. Rhetorically speaking this point has new potency since the disasterous effects of 'Canes has been interjected into the public conscioussness with harsh tactile imagery. For several generations no one in the gulf coast is gonna name their kid Katrina.
Now, maybe I'm a couple steps behind, maybe this is already happening and I've wasted your precious coffee break (a thousand pardons if this is so) but as a new incarnation of the antiwar movement emerges it seems, true believers, that one of their arguments, which I believe is compatible with antiwar 2.0 or Mac X: Sheehan if you dig Apple, is the assertion and neccessity of a homebound National Guard. "Bring our children home" can now be joined by "Bring them home to protect us here"
We need the National Guard to help us fight the other war, the environmental one that we created ourselves, and quite frankly they're much less likely to die rescuing children from flash floods than going toe to toe with insurgents who have them outmaneuvered.
