Zogby. 7/12-15. MoE 4.5% (No trend lines)
This is a real telephone poll, not the weird interactive poll Zogby does for the WSJ. Zogby writes:
Jim Webb got a bounce from his primary that raised him up within four or five points, but he has been criticized for not raising enough money, and he cannot win unless he raises a considerable amount of money. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is interested in Jim Webb. They backed him in the primary, and Democrats, in Virginia as well as all over the country, want to block George Allen from doing well to hinder his run for President. The bottom line - this is a competitive race because this is a competitive state, but Jim Webb has got to start getting some money in.
Webb hasn't been a total fundraising bust. He's raised over $1 million. But the cash-on-hand figures are gastly, with Allen sitting on nearly $7 million from over $12 million raised. Webb has about $400K CoH.
This isn't the kind of race that will be won with money. Allen will vastly outraise and outspend Webb. But Webb needs enough to be competitive. I know everyone is big on the potential of this race, and I know Webb is hitting the fundraising circuit hard.
But if this race is to become a top-tier pickup opportunity, the DSCC (and even third-party groups) will probably have to commit in a big way.
