Some have suggested that the Democrats use Feingold's retort "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" as the slogan for the Democratic Party. It was a great line, but it's a lousy slogan, as it plays into the Rethugs position that the Democrats are threatening 'Murican lives to protect the Queensbury Rules.
I would suggest we hit them where they live:
Liberty and Justice For All - Democrats 2006
We can all remember the brouhaha Poppy Bush made in 1988 with the Pledge. It was stupid, but effective. By using the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, we use the language of patriotism and of duty.
By invoking Liberty, we invoke the mauling of the Bill of Rights.
By invoking Justice, we invoke the prostitution of the government to K Street.
And by invoking "for All", we invoke our status as the party of the commonweal. The Democratic Party stands with the Many, the Whole of America. The Republican Party stands with the Self and the Few.
We also remind people that no one is above the law or beneath the law. Every American is deserving of Liberty, unless their actions deprive them of it. Every American must face the Justice that their actions warrant. That goes for George Bush or a resident of the Ninth Ward.
This frames the debate nicely, methinks.
