Former President Extradited, Bush Pants Get Brown Stain

This news was mentioned briefly as part of a news summary digest last Saturday. But on Democracy Now this morning, Amy Goodman emphasized that this is the very first time that a former Head of State has been successfully extradited from one country to the country where charges where being filed against him. There were instances where heads of state where extradited to the World Court, but this is different. We can hope that is a precedent of which we will see more in the future - hopefully, not long after the criminals in the White House leave office.
More below the fold..
Recall that
Fujimori ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000. In the 1990s Fujimori defeated an insurgency led by the Maoist Shining Path guerilla group. He now faces charges of unleashing a death squad of military intelligence officers responsible for killing 25 people in two separate massacres
On Friday the Chilean Supreme Court ordered him to be extradited back to Peru to faces charges of corruption and sanctioning massacres by paramilitary death squads
He is now in jail in Peru.
What a shame, the rumored (unconfirmed) plans of certain officials to brush up on their Spanish and settle down in a nice Central American country may be dashed.
Links to the audio of Goodman's interview with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet are found here.
I highly recommend listening. The President had herself been imprisoned, along with family, by Augusto Pinochet - you know, the man who was installed into office after Salvador Allende, the democratically elected leader overthrown with the assistance of the CIA. What was that about spreading democracy? Her father died in prison. The woman, with whom I am not familiar, discusses democracy and the way in which she separates the executive from the judicial branch in Chile. If only we had such a President.
So - as I said, the noose may, figuratively, be tightening on those who think they can forever escape punishment for their crimes.
