These past two months we have seen, in Lincoln Nebraska, one of the nastiest city council campaigns in recent memory.
The Republicans spent an estimated $100,000 to oust one man.
The attacked him in TV ads, radio ads and direct mail pieces.
His name is Terry Werner.
If you want details about the nastiness of the campaign, I can post them.
But there's more to the story.
In the Lincoln Journal-Star yesterday was an article. The local county Republican Party chair sent an e-mail to Terry Werner.
GOP chairman taunts Werner
In the article the local county chairman is quoted as saying:
"Let this be a wakeup call to you. The voters of Lincoln wisely rejected your socialist agenda. If needed, we could have addressed your driving record (having a private eye follow you was a joy), . . . and more. Had you been a good Democrat and not a socialist, you might have been re-elected."
The local Republican Party chair goes on:
Later in the day, Haga told the Journal Star editor that he did not hire a private eye but put that in the e-mail because he knew Werner would take it to the press and the Journal Star would write about it -- proving the paper's bias. When asked if he lied to Werner to try to prove a reporter's bias, he said, "I guess I did."
You should read the whole article.
I could write more here. But it seems as if this whole thing is pretty self-explanatory.
