Durbin's apology NOW, was a mistake IMO.
Folks might remember I think his comments were not framed properly, his choice of words poor. But I think his clarification was sufficient to lessen the heat while keeping the high ground on the torture issue.
Don't get me wrong, I think we pound on the Gitmo issue, because it is the right thing to do and because it is the politically smart thing to do. But the hill got a bit higher after this.
I don't blame him for it, but I think he made the wrong choice. I think, in some ways, he didn't trust us enough, us being specifically, the blogs and the grassroots. He didn't think we could turn this. I think he was wrong and that we were already succeeding.
Durbin is a tremendous Senator. And on torture, he has led the fight. But he needs to not listen as much as he appears to to the Beltway types. He took the wrong advice I think.
