Indiana, 2004:

Indiana, 2008:

What was amazing about this victory is that it wasn't just Obama racking up big margins in Gary and Marion County, but a statewide blitz that took increased margins in Democratic strongholds with reduced deficits in formerly blood-red districts.

For example, see that blood-red county in north central Indiana? It's Kosciusko County. In 2004, Kerry lost it 78-21, giving Bush a 16,000-vote margin. In 2008, Obama lost it 68-31, still badly, but his deficit was only 11,000 votes. That's 5,000 votes in that single county alone. Given that Obama won the state by just 26,000 votes, a few of these Red counties could've delivered the state to McCain had they voted similarly to 2006.

Then look at some of the flips -- Vanderburgh county, in the southwest corner of the state, gave Bush a 13,000-vote victory in 2004. This year, Obama won it by almost 2,000. St. Joseph County in on the Michigan border when from a 2,600-vote Bush victory, to a 20,000-vote Obama shellacking.

You can play the game too -- just mouseover the counties to see how they did each year. The gains are dramatic. The most dramatic of any state, in fact. I couldn't find a single county that became redder this year.
