BillO: This one crosses way over the line (Update 3)

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 12:04:36 PM PDT

Media matters and several sites have BillO saying this quote:

I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that's how she really feels -- that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever -- then that's legit. We'll track it down.

So, let me get this straight, Bill, if there is evidence (as determined by you, I guess) that she believes America is a bad country - then are are you seriously going to lead a lynching party?  Really?

This is the last straw.  Look, Michelle Obama said something a little stupid when she spontaneously expressed enthusiasm for her husbands support by Americans of all stripes.  But it doesn't mean she thinks America is a bad country.  But that isn't even the point.

I am outraged.  If the Hillary supporters can get all worked up over the term 'pimp' with respect to Chelsea and get Shuster suspended, and Imus can get fired for saying 'nappy-headed ho', then what the fuck is O'Reilly still doing on the airwaves threatening to form a lynching party?  Ugly fucking racist.

UPDATE:  Since this diary made the rec list, I'm going to walk it back just a little bit.  BillO has made a career out of taking things out of context.  In this case, it looks like the quote above is a little out of context.  So I will fill in a little bit.  Apparently, a caller wanted to go after Michelle Obama, because of her now infamous quote.  BillO, to his credit, didn't want to attack her because he didn't feel, I guess, that she 'really thinks America is a bad country or a flawed nation.'  But he chose to use the term 'lynch' in expressing his feelings.  And I still think their is a dog whistle there - although it's not an outright call for it.

UPDATE2: During the Shuster fiasco, after he apologized, KO apologized and Shuster was suspended, I counseled the angry diarist to let it go.  I don't want to be hypocritical here.  I will say that BillO is all together different than Shuster.  Shuster is a solid journalist that has never done anything remotely sexist in the past.  He used a term that could be interpreted another way.  However, BillO has not really earned the benefit of the doubt.  So, I think what I would really like to see is a full-throated apology from BillO for an extremely poor choice of words.  Oh, and if his network, Fox News, wasn't deliberately airing a doctored video of Michelle Obama, I would have a bit more sympathy.

UPDATE3: Scooped by the Front Page.  Go ahead and unrecommend this so that we can give some other diaries a chance.
