Super Tuesday: We Won
Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 01:49:53 PM PDT
It's totally clear at this point that the Super Tuesday results on the Democratic side were inconclusive -- a virtual tie -- while McCain emerged as the clear frontrunner on the Republican side. We've also seen in a number of diaries today (e.g., here, here, and here) that Democratic turnout was much higher than the Republicans.
We've got some total numbers now that show not only how close our race was, but also how much we blew the GOP out of the water yesterday. I think these numbers bode well for Obama in the primaries, but they show once again the Republican contest is simply about the right to lose to a Democrat in November. Follow me to the other side for more...
CNN is reporting that only 0.4% separate Clinton from Obama in the cumulative number of votes cast yesterday:
By midday Wednesday, 14,645,638 votes were reported cast for either Obama or Clinton on Tuesday. Clinton had won 7,350,238 of those votes (50.2 percent) while Obama captured 7,295,400 votes (49.8 percent).
That's a total difference of some 55,000 votes out of nearly 15,000,000 cast! Talk about razor thin differences.
Karen Tumulty over at Time's blog reports similar numbers, but she adds in the totals on the Republican side:
McCain: 43.1% (3,611,459)
Romney: 35.4% (2,961,834)
Huckabee: 21.5% (1,796,729)
That totals up to about 8 million total votes. But looking at it another way, McCain and Romney together got about 6.5 million votes. In other words, the top two Republicans together received less votes than either one of both of our top candidates.
I think Obama has momentum and is going to catch up to and surpass Hillary before the primaries are over. Even if he doesn't, though, our party is fired up and ready to go. I feel sorry for any Republican who goes up against us!
