"Breaking News" in IL-08
Thu Mar 13, 2008 at 11:32:49 AM PDT
I just received an amazing "Breaking News" update from the Steve Greenberg (R-IL-08)campaign... snicker snicker
National Republicans Target Melissa Bean - Mar 13
Once again, the 50-State-all-seats-count strategy is paying off...
After using up about a third of Dave McSweeney's fortune last cycle (well, they were all loans, maybe Dave has paid himself back by now...), the NRCC recruited Steve Greenberg as this cycle's self-funder to run against Melissa Bean.
Greenberg is most noted for being an ex-minor-league hockey player and for moving his family businesses out of northern Illinois to the less-expensive labor market in rural Wisconsin. Go figure.
I'm personally thrilled with how up-to-date and current Steve and his staff are with their "Breaking News" releases.
Over a week ago the NRCC announced the 23 Congressional seats they will be targeting. I think it was kinda news then.
Steve must have read his email this morning, for just today we have "Breaking News:"
Update From the Campaign Trail
National Republicans Target Melissa Bean - Mar 13
WOW. The NRCC is targeting Bean. Just in case any of you were sound asleep more than a week ago...
Why is this good news for all of us?
Well, the NRCC just spent nearly 1/3 of their cash-on-hand to try and block Bill Foster's special election win. One-third of their cash to get slammed in Denny Hastert's former district. One-third of their cash to try and validate the Uberweis. I love the way they are spending their cash.
The joke is how self-funder Steve now portrays the race in IL-08...
"The Democratic Party is raising cash in record numbers, and even with the help of the NRCC I will be unable to match their resources without your help."
Does Steve really believe they recruited him as a multi-millionaire self-funder so they could help him with the race. Hmmmmm. OK, Steve. Good.
So what is actually in play for November in the Chicago media market?
Bill Foster D-IL-14
Melissa Bean D-IL-08
Open IL-11 (IL Senate Majority Leader Debbie Halverson, formerly Weller-R)
Mark Kirk R-IL-10 (Dan Seals, 2nd run and climbing steadily)
Peter Roskam R-IL-06 (Jill Morgenthaler, Tammy Duckworth last cycle)
So, based upon last cycle and this month's special election, the NRCC will need to spend a minimum of $6.5 million (which they don't presently have)in the Chicago market alone to keep from losing more seats. And we've all seen what Obama coattails can do in this market.
Yeah, Bean is a target. Thanks for reminding us, Steve.
That recruited self-funders are begging now is a great sign.
Keep shooting us your "Breaking News."
