Obama's New Politics: What his next step should be.

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 08:28:49 PM PDT

As many Kos'ers have expounded upon Hillary's newest attack. I agree that tactically, as a Democratic partisan, she has crossed the line. Essentially she now needs to either decieve or bully the remaining superdelegates into granting her the nomination so she can win the Presidency.

If not Democrats in congress ought to marginalize her. Of course congressional Democrats are typically spineless, fearful beings so they probably won't. I just ask them to remember that this line of attack on Obama is just the last in a long line of actions detrimental to the Democratic party.

So, given the new Wright attack and Judas branding ( a tactic designed to intimidate superdelegates), what does Obama do in response.

I think his course is simple. He needs to launch another major address, this one focused on American Political Culture. He can use Hillary's tactics to drive the content of this address:

  1. My opposition continues to want to drive me apart from a friend just because I think he is terribly wrong. My relationship with this man is much deeper than the politics of his comments. I will not sacrifice this relationship for political gain.
  1. Much like Reverend Wright, my opposition is mired in the old politics. This old politics is rooted fundamentally in the notion that your opposition is your enemy. An enemy that must be vanquished at any cost. Decisions are made solely on the principle of political advantage gained.
  1. For the past 16 years our politics has been dominated by this grim vision. Our ability to meet the challenges facing us in today's complex world has been hampered as a result.
  1. This grim outlook has lead to the notion that America is a collection idealogically divided states and people. Red versus Blue. Religious versus non Religious. Elites versus Average Folks. Rich versus Poor. Black versus White. I could go on in the number of ways politicians have tried to divide us the past few decades.
  1. My opposition believes that those that do not support them in an election are irrelevant and unimportant. The only voters, states or delegates that matter are those that support them. Loyalty is prized above conviction. Entire sections of the country are irrelevant to them because the Democrats won't win them anyway. You can not be a friend to anyone you vehemently disagree with, in fact you must reject them completely.

What I reject is this style of politics.

I reject my oppositions attempt to force me apart from my friend for political gain. Beyond the personal nature of my relationship, it is troubling to me that this expectation that you must agree with everything someone says in order to be at all associated with them. This idea is at the core of why Washington approaches paralysis. This narrow view of free association must end.

I reject the notion that anything that can be used to political advantage should be used. If it does more harm to the political process, if it turns off voters intentionally it should not be used. I don't proclaim perfection on this front, but I do try to rise above this style of politics as best I can.

We need to come together to address the issues of the day. I am the leader in this race seeking to engage all Americans no matter their location or micro trended grouping.  I want to represent all Americans. I want to leave the divisive approach behind us in Presidential. I am not asking you to agree with me idealogically. I am asking to join me in rejecting the old political paradigm which is holding us back and trying to hold us back.
