Dem Primary compared to a horse race...

...An actual horse race. One of the most famous horse races in history, the 99th running of the Kentucky Derby, May 5, 1973 won by all time great Secretariat in the first leg of his becoming the first triple crown winner in 25 years.
In winning the Derby, Secretariat became the first horse to cover the race distance of one and a quarter miles in under two minutes (1 minute 59 2/5 seconds), a record which still stands to this day.
No other horse would break the two minute barrier at Churchill Downs for another 2/5 of a second.
More below
The great thoroughbred Sham ran second in 1973 to Secretariat in both The Kentucky Derby and The Preakness and was neck and neck with him through the first half of The Belmont Stakes before fading.
Here is the wikipedia description of the Derby race:
Sham ripped two teeth out on the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby, bleeding from the start of the race he poured his entire heart into his effort. Secretariat won by 2 ½ lengths over Sham, running 1:59 2/5 for the 1 1/4 miles, the first horse to break 2 minutes in the Derby. (The previous record was 2:00, set by Northern Dancer in 1964.) By running 2 1/2 lengths behind Secretariat, Sham ran the distance in either 1:59 4/5 or 2:00. As races were not timed to 1/100th of a second, and nonwinning times were not taken, no exact time is available.
It wouldn't be until 2001 that another horse won the Derby with a time under 2 minutes. Monarchos won it in 2001 in an electronically timed 1:59.97, which is by convention converted to 1:59 4/5. No other horse, through and including the 2007 running of the Kentucky Derby has ever been below 2 minutes. Sham's Derby time was thus no worse than the fourth fastest time in history (behind Secretariat, Monarchos, and Northern Dancer) and may have been the second fastest time in history.
If not for the misfortune of being born the same year as Secretariat and having to compete against an opponent of historic ability Sham would most likely have been regarded as being among the greatest racing thoroughbreds in history. As it happens, he is largely forgotten by the general public.
Sometimes a performance that would have previously been unheard of will simply come up short against an all time effort.
As we see this equally amazing Democratic primary season come to an increasingly likely close we should not forget or diminish the historic significance of what Hillary Clinton has achieved. She has become, while not the first female Presidential candidate, the first major female Presidential contender and, if not for the misfortune (for her) of timing in coming up against another historic and talented contender, could have very easily been the Democratic nominee.
I know that many here expect her go scorched earth in her quest at this point but I feel she has many years of service ahead of her and a large role in the future of the Democratic party and, once passions have cooled, will inherit a role of elder states person in the party.
This Obama supporter salutes her years of service.
