Writing In Obama (with poll)

Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 12:55:06 PM PDT

In moments of sadness, while watching my mother, a lifelong Democrat, shake her head in dismay at dirty tactics and outright lies, I have said, "I just can't vote for her. I won't vote at all."  In moments of anger, vowing to teach my nieces, my future daughters even, that this is not what it means to be a woman, I have said, "I'll vote for McCain instead."

I didn't realize that there was a third option if Hillary Clinton is given the nomination by the superdelegates: writing in "Barack Obama" on my ballot in November.  I don't know anything, I confess, about what this entails or what it might ultimately achieve, but the idea of it makes me feel relieved.  It offers a way for me to exercise my right to vote--a right that, as a woman and a minority, I know I cannot take for granted--without violating my core beliefs, my integrity, my principles, my conscience.
