The Chutzpah of Hillary

So, Goldwater Girl, Ms. Rodham of Wellesley, is blaming Al Gore's "loss" in 2000 on his "elitism."

Putting aside the question of whether Gore won, and Hillary's "elitist" work for the Rose law firm and Wal-Mart, I want to focuse on the chutzpah (nerve, for those not familiar with the term ;) of her blaming Gore's failure to enter the white house in January 2001 on Gore.  The chutzpah is, that Gore's failure to win a clear victory was the fault of . . . Bill and Hillary Clinton.  I know you don't want to hear that you wonderful couple, but the truth hurts.

Back in Clinton's first term, there was a desire on the part of many on the Clinton team to settle the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit.  However, one person put the kabosh on such settlement talk.  That person's name was Hillary Clinton.

After the matter was vetted by the Supreme Court, depositions were required to be taken in the case.  In the meantime, Bill was having a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky.  Manipulated by Clinton's right-wing enemies, Bill lied in a deposition regarding his relationship with Monica.  Whether he was right to do that, and the weight it should have been given, is not at issue here.  Rather, once the relationship was exposed, Bill decided not to come clean with the American people, and abetted by Hillary, engaged in an eight-month stonewall before having to admit the truth.  This led to the ridiculous Republican impeachment effort.

Meanwhile, Al Gore, who had been leading in the polls for the 2000 race at the beginning of 1998, found himself down by double digits to G.W. Bush at the beginning of the 1999.  Did Gore do anything to cause these poll numbers to change?  Was his alleged "elitism" to blame?  No.  He suffered the fallout from Hillary's poor advice and Bill's lying.  Except for a couple of weeks in late August and early September 2000, Gore never regained the lead in the polls.  Despite this, Gore managed to win the popular vote.  Had the Paula Jones matter been settled, the Lewinsky matter in all likelihood would not have come to light, and even if it did, there would have been no deposition for Bill to lie at.

So, the result of Hillary's poor advice drove down Gore's numbers and turned what should have been a fairly comfortable win into a dead heat.  Now, Hillary is turning around and, in effect, blaming the victim when she herself bears a great degree of the responsibility.  That's what I mean by chutpzah.

Gore can afford to rise above this.  But Obama cannot.  The time has come for Obama to emulate the Clinton campaign and use the "kitchen sink" approach.  Everything should be fair game.  From Web Hubbell to Monica Lewinsky.  From the Rose law firm to Wal-Mart.  The time has come to take the gloves off and finish the Clintons off once and for all as a force in the Democratic party.
