Basketball Diary - Will Obama Be the First Hoopster in the WhiteHouse?

Wed Apr 16, 2008 at 01:10:29 PM PDT

Yes he will

I kept waiting for an open thread to post this video of Bryant Gumbel interviewing Barack Obama about basketball.  I waited & waited & finally decided that the fourteen minute video, The Audacity of Hoops which recently aired on HBO's Real Sports is wonderful enough to merit a diary.

Enjoy!

The Audacity of Hoops is just under 15 minutes and includes lots of photos of Obama growing up & interviews with the basketball coach at Punahou School in Hawai'i as well as Michele's brother, Craig Robinson.

Here's one of my favorite parts of the interview with Obama:

Bryant Gumbel:  Barack Obama, who has billed himself as the candidate of change would - if he gets there - be the first hoopster in the White House.

How dearly would you love to play Beorge W. in one on one?

Barack Obama: You know, he looks like a pretty good athlete.  He takes that mountain biking seriously.  But I'm pretty certaqin I can take him.

Bryant Gumbel:  Do you know there's an outdoor hoop on the South Lawn of the White House?

Barack Obama:  I wasn't aware of that.  I was thinking I gonna have to tear down the bowling alley to build a basketball court.

Update: This morning turneresq published a fine diary about the Real Sports interview.  That diary contained a clip from the The Audacity of Hoops documentary/interview.
