We all know there are some phrases that just stop a discussion cold. You know when you see them that it's all over, and any further input from you will only lead to a 20-round flame war. Whether your reaction is to take a step back, or go "Bring it", here's a useful list of some of the most popular phrases that have showed up again and again on Dkos (although some very rare examples have been included due to their sheer egregiousness). I have used repersentitive Dialogue to capture the essence of each phrase. Exact wording and usage can vary widely.
Go below the cut to find my list, and if you have any to add, post them to the comments.
Phrases that let you know a discussion has jumped the shark
"This is why the Republicans beat us"
when used in reference to meta issues peculiar to Dkos, that have nothing to do with elections etc.
"What are you? The PC police?"
Or any used of the phrase "politically correct", "PC" etc. to denote that the speaker feels persecuted. A sure sign that you don't have to read any further unless you're reading solely for humor value.
"Go back and play in your Dkos sandbox"
Or any phrase implying that posting on Dkos is a waste of time, an exercise in armchair politics, etc. If you really want to be an smart-ass, ask anyone who uses this one what the hell they're doing here. The verbal backflips that follow are usually good for a laugh.
"Don't delete it, I liked it"
Re: a redundant, or otherwise unsatisfactory diary. Usually, whenever a diary breaks the rules, they'll be several calls for it's deletion, with the one lonely "I liked it" vote from the person who "didn't see it before" (never mind that it was on the rec list for 20 hours, and could have been found by doing a tags search).
"You're censoring me! I thought you believed in freedom of speech?"
Most often used by people who've had their comments zeroed, though I've seen it used by people on other internet communities simply for being asked to defend their statements (and they were usually wing nuts). This is always a sure sign you can write someone's comments off.
"Fuck the site rules, they don't apply to me"
Okay, I've never actually seen someone say this outright. Instead, they try to come up with belabored explanations for why they should be granted an exception, and generally responded with hostility if you call their logic into question. Interestingly, most users of this phrase never actually try to defend their actions as being within the rules, they give the the point that rules were broken gladly, but But BUT... it's okay because X makes it okay.
"I pay for Kos's bandwidth, I can do whatever I want"
A variation of he above. This very rarely used jaw dropper (I've seen it once that I can recall) defies rational response, while inviting ballistic ridicule.
"You can't troll rate me! I'm not a troll" Anyone who uses this tactic in response to a troll rating deserves all the troll ratings they can get.
"Who's payroll are you on?"
There actually might be some situations where this is a legitimate question (like when said to a certain rabid Libermen backer who ironically likes to throw this one around himself), but for the most part it's a stupid and clumsy attempt at an ad homanim attack, used when the attacker has nothing better to go on, and has to pull something out of thin air.
"John Kerry wasn't a real military man"
whatever your opinion of Kerry, if you buy into that rightwing smear then shame on you for it!
"Armando deleted my comments"
Made by fools who don't understand what zeros are. While every now and then we get "my comments were deleted", It's amazing how often Armando is blamed personally for what Scoop did.
"[User X] has it in for me"
Often connected to Armando, but even more often connected to other users. This is usually used as a red herring when someone who has a long-running feud with another user (at least in the mind of the speaker) runs into opposition from that person in an attempt to bring others to their defense. It's twice as funny when the feud is totally one sided.
"I'm being persecuted for not towing the party line"
Which usually means "I'm being persecuted for expecting other people to see things my way, and acting like an ass when they don't."
Those are what I could think of. Feel free to add yours below in the comments.
