Thanks, John. You Just Framed the Democratic Message for November.

Mon May 19, 2008 at 10:22:19 AM PDT

Sometimes, when you are given a gift that's intended as a slight, you can't help but smile.  John McCain just gave Barack Obama a big wet kiss of a gift, and I doubt he even knows it.

Today, McCain called Obama's foreign policy "reckless."  Now, we know the reasons why McCain thinks it is reckless -- i.e., Obama is "inexperienced" -- but McCain showed he just doesn't get it at all.

And in true form, he's given the Democrats the message to win in November.

See, this is on of those "gotcha" points that in debate terms can be turned around on McCain. Because Obama can simply say the following:

  1. What's more reckless...keeping Saddam Hussein contained with sanctions, or invading Iraq and entering an ongoing 100 year quagmire?
  1. What's more reckless...engaging our enemies in negotiation, or threatening to go to war with Iran?
  1. What's more reckless...attempting to end nuclear proliferation, or letting North Korea go along unchecked?
  1. What's more reckless...going after Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan, or coddling the military regime of Pakistan?
  1. What's more reckless...finding a way to renegotiate bad trade deals such as NAFTA, or simply ignoring the bad aspects of those trade deals and saying we will honor them, damn the consequences?

You get the point.

"Reckless" is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

And I'm willing to bet the American people think the past 8 years have been pretty damn reckless.
