Dianne Feinstein: No Plans for Party Unity

Mon May 19, 2008 at 04:39:15 PM PDT

Senator Dianne Feinstein is a Democratic Senator in my state of California.   Today I spoke with three staffers in Senator Feinstein's offices (Los Angeles and DC) with a very simple question:

I know Dianne Feinstein supports Hillary Clinton.   And I see Clinton supporters going on TV and claiming they will never vote for Senator Obama should he be the nominee.   I see a terrible rift in the party.

What is Senator Feinstein's plan for reuniting the party after the nominee is picked?

Their answers below the fold.

Staffer 1, a youthful sounding female told me that she did not know of one.  She referred me to Dianne Feinstein's web site and said "If she made a statement about it, or had a plan it would be there."

I told her I had reviewed the site and had not seen any plan for bringing the party together before November.

Her response was something like "Well, I know Senator Feinstein has talked to Senator Clinton."

"Yes," I agreed.  "I'm sure they talk often.  Sen. Feinstein is a supporter of Sen. Clinton."

The staffer continued:  "And Senator Clinton said she has a plan."

"You mean 'To win'", I asked.

"Yes."

"Well of course she plans to win.  Everyone does.    I mean, I plan to be a millionaire, but that doesn't make it so.  And it is looking like she is unlikely to win, even though she is going to events and claiming to have the "popular vote" which is ludicrous seeing as four states have caucuses and don't have popular votes to count.     So Clinton's plan to win doesn't address this rift or do anything about bring the party together after the nomination process is over.   Does Senator Feinstein have a plan to address that rift?"

"Well, I'm not sure.  I haven't heard of one.  So I don't think so. "

"Then if I write, or stand out in public and say, Senator Feinstein does not have a plan for party unity before November, that would be a fair statement to make, right?"

She paused for a second...   "Can you hold please."

"Absolutely." I'm trying to sound cooperative.

"Hello."   it was another staffer.   I asked her to identify herself.  I identified myself.

I explained the situation.   After several minutes of conversation -- including wether there was a rift or not (she did agree that it looked like a rift)  she said she didn't think Senator Feinstein had a plan.   She didn't know of any.   I repeated my question (in bold above). "

She referred me to someone in the DC office.

::

I've called that office.  Left a message on the voicemail of the person I was told to speak to about this... and I called back to see if anyone else might be able to answer this question.

I spoke with another staffer, I explained my question.

His response was to informed me that it is against the law for them to talk about the election.

I said, "Well, two people in the Los Angeles office have already spoken about this to me.  According to them Dianne Feinstein has no plan for party unity."

He repeated that he could not break the law by talking to me about election politics.

I'll update this if I get an answer.   But as it stands now, from the staffers that I spoke to, no one is aware of any plans Dianne Feinstein has for bringing the party together before November, or how to address the divisiveness being promoted on TV by women who claim they will never vote for Barack Obama.

I wonder if any of our leaders are making any plans for party unity.

Tomorrow I'm calling Senator Boxer.
