On this site, there are those who think we have a duty to seek impeachment of the President and others think it is a waste of time and effort.
I touched on why we have a duty to impeach. Apian informed us of a virtual media blackout on reporting on the Downing Memo. rhfactor is advocating 30 second/60 second commerical project. Let's put it all together.
Whatever anyone's position is on impeachment, I believe we can all agree on one thing: the American people deserve to know of the memo's existence, and of the fact that the President lied not only about the WMD, but also about his diplomatic efforts. If the media won't report on it, let's take it directly to the viewers.
Both liberal and conservative groups have been quite successful in airing commercials. Is it expensive? Yes. But if it's controverial enough (and since it will tell the truth, it will be) it will likely get far more coverage than the whatever limited airing we purchase.
So, use this diary to brainstorm ideas. This is not just for the sake of it; I'll relay your ideas to groups as I try to get such a commerical on air. If no group wants to help us air the ad, well then, we'll just see if we can do it ourselves.
I'll go first:
Commerical opens with images of the flag-drapped coffins the Pentagon hid.
Voiceover: They gave their lives in battle. The government didn't want you to see these pictures.
Cut to images of the Iraqi girl (the one with outstretched bloodied hands in the street) and other casualities
Voiceover: Hundreds of thousands have been killed, maimed, orphaned, tortured. The government does not want you to see these pictures.
Cut to images of Powell's presentation at the UN, then images of the reports saying no WMD.
Voiceover: The Bush administration told us Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. They knew before the war there weren't any.
Cut to image of the Downing Street memo
Voiceover: Now. Evidence that the President lied to us, the American people.
Cut to clip of Bush in March 2003 saying "the American people can know that every measure was taken to avoid war"
Zoom in on Downing Street memo
Voiceover: In 2002, the President already decided to take us to war. He "fixed the facts" to take us to war.
The President lied.
Can you ever trust him again?
