Hillary and the popular vote

Tue May 20, 2008 at 06:21:23 PM PDT

For all of the snarky attacks on Hillary's popular vote statements, the fact is that she's about as likely as Obama to win the popular vote when all is said and done.  I can't see why she would quit under those circumstances, especially when no one has ever been this close to the nomination and quit before.

As of this moment -- after KY and just before OR -- she's about 200,000 votes behind if you count Florida, where Obama was on the ballot, and don't count MI.  You also need to estimate the outcomes for Nevada (which Hillary won by 6%), Maine and Iowa.  That's simple because percentages and overal turnouts were reported even though candidate by candidate vote counts were not.  Washington has unofficial results available.

You add it all up, and it all comes down to peurto rico, which will probably have about 2 million votes cast (the total from the 2004 governor's race). Hillary could easily pick up 400,000 votes there.  She could also lose ground, we'll see.

At the end of the day, she may be able to say that more people voted for me than Obama.

You'll have your snarky comebacks about delegate counts, but for all those hyper-obnoxious Obama supporters out there, it will be fun for me to know that deep down in your hearts, you'll know that your guy was not the people's pick.

And don't give me the line that he didn't campaign in Florida.  If there had been a contested election there, Hillary's percentage may have come down slightly but increased turnout would have given her a greater margin of raw votes.  Florida was tailor made for Hillary with legions of older dem voters, and the fact that south florida is the sixth borough of New York.
