"The Nearest Competitive Cong. Dist" Mapping Tool

If you are like me, and a bunch of other Americans, you live in a safely held Democratic congressional district.  You know that it won't flip to Republican in a million years.  So making a big effort to help out the local campaign seems kind of low on the priority list.

How would you find out how close a competitive congressional district is to you?  Wouldn't you like to have a tool that you can use to discover where the closest district where a Democrat has a shot of unseating a Republican?  You just enter your zip code and BAM, a list of the nearest districts comes back in the results, with perhaps some background on the race so you could figure out where to put your volunteer efforts?

Perhaps there's something already out there - if there is, I haven't found it.  If there's not, it would sure be a great tool.

Here's why:

in highly populated areas like mine (the Los Angeles area), there are congressional districts piled one on top of another.  You only have to go a few miles to get to the next district.

I just discovered that the CA-46, a district where a good Dem candidate Debbie Cook (Responsible Plan endorser) is challenging rightwing Republican Dana Rohrabacher for the seat, is a mere half mile from my home.  But since the information about the great candidate I saw from Firedoglake and other places wasn't the same place where I see congressional maps, I hadn't put two and two together.  Many, many people in higher density areas live close to other congressional districts, and I suspect many would be surprised at how close they are to districts where they can help elect a Democrat.

In my case, it took me a lot longer than it should have to realize how close I am to the 46th district.  Now I've realized that that district is where I should be doing my voter registration efforts I'm going to be doing as part of the Obama Vote for Change effort.  New voters there will help flip the district to Blue whereas new Democrats registered in my home district, which is already quite blue and held by a Democrat, wouldn't make as much difference.

And the south bay of Los Angeles is almost totally comprised of safe Democratic districts -- if the volunteer power of those in these safe districts could be put to focus on voter registration and other efforts in the 46th and other Republican held districts nearby, it would make flipping these districts to blue a heck of a lot easier.

Anyways, I've determined what I want, now I guess I have to figure out if it's out there and if not, start creating it myself, to the best of my modest ability.
