I sense enormous angst among Democrats around the country about allegations of voter suppression efforts. Some efforts have already been uncovered (e.g. fake registration drives), but the SCLM has been reluctant to give them the attention they deserve. Also, some of the worst things might only become manifest on Nov. 2 (if at all)--by which time it would be too late for web-based activists to get the news out to the voters who need to know. A third, related problem, is that some Kerry supporters are becoming discouraged that the foreseen but unknown efforts will somehow torpedo the campaign on Election Day.
Here is a suggestion: The K/E campaign should plan for a major rally on Nov. 2 around noon, somewhere critical such as Ohio or Florida. The purpose of the rally (perhaps not announced in advance) would be to put on the record the known facts about voter suppression efforts around the country. More in the extended-entry.
Somebody with credibility, such as Carter or Clinton, should be tapped to step forward and catalogue anything that had been uncovered during the morning voting. It would also be an occasion to set out the information about earlier registration fraud, such as Sproul's. At a minimum, that would guarantee the TV media would cover the issues. Just by planning such an event, it might also discourage the Republicans from attempting any voter suppression (if that is what they plan--and to be fair, we cannot be certain in advance about what they will do). Given all that we have learned about their plans, however, I think that something like this would be prudent. It could also be hugely successful in influencing undecided voters on Election Day, if such efforts are actually underway.
