John McCain can't remember the cost of gas

Sat Jun 28, 2008 at 10:32:11 PM PDT

What world does John McCain live in?  Not this world, not the world that you and I have to struggle in each and every day, no, not that world.  The world in which John McCain lives in is one that cares not to know what the cost of a gallon of gas is:

WICKSOL: When was the last time you pumped your own gas and how much did it cost?

MCCAIN: Oh, I don’t remember. Now there’s Secret Service protection. But I’ve done it for many, many years. I don’t recall and frankly, I don’t see how it matters.

I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of town hall meetings, many as short a time ago as yesterday. I communicate with the people and they communicate with me very effectively.

In his world it doesn't matter what he pays for a gallon of gas, but in the everyday world of Americans, it matters, and no, our job is not to communicate the price of gas to anyone running for President.

It would have been very easy for McCain, if he knew what the current cost of gas was, to say, the last time I pumped gas it certainly wasn't near the $4 people are paying today, he could have added anything that would have at least made it seem like he was aware of what was going on, but he couldn't give a price because he just doesn't know.

Of course McCain's ignorance at the cost of gas isn't much different from Bush's.  A few months ago Bush was surprised to hear that gas was projected togo over $4 a gallon:

QUESTION: What’s your advice to the average American who is hurting now — facing the prospect of $4 a gallon gasoline, a lot of people facing –

BUSH: Wait a minute. What did you just say? You’re predicting $4 a gallon gas?

QUESTION: A number of analysts are predicting $4 a gallon gasoline this spring when they reformulate.

BUSH: That’s interesting. I hadn’t heard that.

There are two Americas, two worlds, and McCain and Bush live in one, and the rest of us live in another.  In their world prices don't matter, they have all they need, they have people to do jobs for them, and they can choose which house they want to visit for the day.

In our world we cringe when we see the price of gas and wonder how we are going to put food on the table, we are still waiting for affordable health care, in our world foreclosures are forcing us into the streets to sleep, praying that maybe there might be an open bed at a shelter.  In our world we are aware of the fact that our salaries aren't keeping up with the cost of living, we don't have people to do things for us, we take care of our own things, and we know that our neighbors are hurting without them having to communicate this to us.

In their world those who are rich have been rewarded for hard work, and those who struggle somehow have made bad choices in their lives.  In their world country clubs, yachts and private estates are the norm, in their world children are given the best of everything money can buy, education, private music lessons and health care.

In our world we donate our time and energy so that our public schools won't lose their music program, we fight for every penny we can to see that it ends up in the class room.  In our world we work hard, we try to save, but wages aren't the same as investments and we have made bad choices.

In our world we will stand up and let those elitists who can't even remember when they pumped their own gas, or even the current cost of gas, we will let them know loud and clear that we want change, and we will fight like hell to get Obama elected because it is our choice to do so, and it is the only choice for our nation.
