Political Wire passes along a story from the
New York Sun that a "small but influential group of GOP insiders" are urging Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) "to seek the Republican nomination for president in 2008." Apparently, the pro-Barbour chatter is on the rise.
Nominating an Old South politician with links to racist groups for President would seem to be a death wish for the GOP, and if party moderates have any power left after Bush's second term is over, one imagines that they'll act to head off this insurgency from the right-wing ground troops.
Then again, the Republicans saw Barbour fit to be national party chairman from 1993 to 1997, so maybe the GOP establishment will get behind him, too. In which case GOP prospects for holding on to the White House don't seem too bright.
