Hillary Clinton for SCOTUS

If you're like me, you're already sick of the mainstream media's nonstop chattering about Hillary Clinton being Obama's VP.  I don't think this would be a wise move for Obama (for reasons I won't go into here but that have been mentioned ad naseum on dailykos already), and I don't think it will happen.  But in looking over all of the options for the next best step for Hillary Clinton's career, the one that makes the most sense to me is for President Obama to appoint Hillary Clinton to the nation's Supreme Court.  

I can think of many reasons why Supreme Court Justice would be the absolute best next step in Hillary Clinton's illustrious career:

First, talk about power.  This is one of the most powerful positions in the country, certainly much more powerful than being VP, Governor of New York or even Senate majority leader.  You basically answer to nobody, your word is the law of the land, and you're on the Court for life.  If Hillary wants a powerful position, you can't get much better than this.

Second, it would get Hillary out of the Senate. I'm not sure if this is true, but I would suspect that it is going to be a tad uncomfortable for Hillary to go back to the Senate and work with all of her colleagues who supported Obama.  She'd be able to do it, of course, but I'm sure she's not looking forward to it with any kind of glee.  She could still play an important leadership role in the Senate, but she's so far down the senority list that it would take a long time for that to happen. If she knew a SCOTUS appointment was in the offing, that would certainly make it easier for Hillary to handle her return to the Senate until a SCOTUS slot opened up.

Third, Hillary could break new ground. She wouldn't be the first woman on SCOTUS, but she could become the first woman to be Chief Justice of SCOTUS.

Fourth, we need more women on SCOTUS. A lot more women. It's appalling that there is only one woman on SCOTUS.  Hillary could be the first of several women to be appointed to the Supreme Court in an Obama administration.

Last but not least, Hillary would make a great Supreme Court Justice.  As much as I've criticized Clinton over the course of this campaign, I really think she would excel on the Supreme Court.  She is a brilliant woman who would bring fairness and compassion to the Court.  I know I'd rest easier knowing Hillary was on the case.

I don't know if this is the kind of thing that Obama could promise to Hillary behind the scenes right now.  But is so, I think he should do it.  What do you think?
