All this talk from Phyllis Schafly, Tom DeLay and (through his CoS) Tom Coburn about impeaching "activist judges" who are "hostile to faith" forget one stark fact.
Let's say it all together, as a group: The Republicans don't even have enough senators in their own caucus to remove an impeached judge from office.
Let's review. You need 67 senators--a two-thirds majority--to sustain articles of impeachment and thus remove an impeached official from office. There are only 55 Repubs in the Senate--12 short of the needed majority. And no way Harry Reid is going to let his 45 charges bolt over on this one.
And anyone who seriously believes Bill Frist and Mitch McConnell can hold onto all 55 needs a shot of thorazine. By my count, at least six senators are certain to oppose such a move:
McCain
Chafee
Collins
Snowe
Specter
Warner
I'd say another six would lean against it:
Shelby
Grassley
Hagel
Lugar
Smith
Voinovich
This would be an even bigger waste of time than the Clinton impeachment--if only because it's even more obvious that the Repubs don't have the votes.
I wonder if Frist knows this and doesn't have the balls to admit it.
