Rove forces are here - Will you fight or stay pure?

Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 04:15:51 PM PDT

The last few weeks we've seen two things going on:

  1. A McCain campaign that's not particularly together, without any coherent themes.  Given how uncharismatic their candidate is, it's a problem for them.
  1. Obama speaking on a series of issues which have upset the grassroots. FISA is probably the biggest example.  Some have gone so far as to question whether they would vote for Obama or, even if they'd vote for him, if they'd contribute their time and money for the campaign.

Well, the time is coming to decide -- Will you fight or stay pure?

This is a key moment because McCain has reorganized his campaign operation and he is bringing in the Rove forces.

Mr. Schmidt's elevation is the latest sign of increasing influence of veterans of Mr. Rove's campaign efforts in the McCain operation. Nicolle Wallace, who was communications director for Mr. Bush in the 2004 campaign and in his White House, has joined the campaign as a senior adviser, and will travel with Mr. McCain every other week. Greg Jenkins, another veteran of Mr. Rove's operation, has joined the McCain communications operation.

Now, we know what to expect from Rove operatives -- lots of smears, lots of defining Obama as not a real American, lots of race-baiting (whether subtle or not so subtle).  And they set up their operation by going after Clark, thereby claiming that the Obama campaign started the smears.

Here's what a RNC hack said today:

"How can Obama call for a positive campaign, even as his surrogates continue to unapologetically smear John McCain? It’s clear Obama does not mind political attacks – just attacks that hurt his political interests. Once again Obama is putting his own political interests first and holding everyone to a higher standard than he holds himself."

News also came today that the RNC is launching a big ad buy against Obama.

Meanwhile, a number of religious right leaders have thrown their lot in with McCain. I don't think the enthusiasm is there for him, but they've made their choice.
Religous right on board for McCain

So, what's it going to be?  Are you committed to staying pure? Or are you going to figure that, hey, it's time to elect a Democratic president who you don't agree with on everything but will be far, far better than the Republican?

Whatever your key issue is -- the war, social justice, environment, tax fairness, reproductive rights, the courts, energy -- you know Obama is far better than McCain.

Personally, after a break from campaigning, I'm getting fired up and ready to go. I'm ready to make the phone calls, hit the streets.  I'm fired up, ready to go.

How about you? Will you fight or stay pure?
