Top Comments: Corrections Edition

Mon Jul 21, 2008 at 07:01:10 PM PDT

Yesterday, I published a diary on the most prolific Daily Kos commenters. It was filled with statistics garnered from Search and I checked close to two hundred likely names, mining past diaries on the subject, before getting my list of 30.

It wasn't enough. I failed to check one list of names, and consequently omitted two commenters, one of whom identified himself and another I found on my own after I dug into my files to determine why I hadn't checked the first guy.

I published a series of updates, three in all, correcting the record as I discovered my errors. It's what we do on Daily Kos. Accuracy, and truth, matter here.

This is one of many things the netroots has right: it matters that the facts are true, that accuracy counts, that corrections are made if a mistake has been. You see it here on Daily Kos, you see it on Talking Points Memo, you see it most places in the liberal blogosphere. When someone makes a mistake, they feel a responsibility to set the record straight even if it makes them look foolish.

The strikeout is a badge of honor, because it doesn't hide the fact that an error was made—it shows what the mistake was and what the truth really is. This is important information: it gives the reader an opportunity to see the inaccurate information, register that it's invalid, and also note what's correct. The contradiction is important; otherwise, the inaccuracy is more likely to linger as a "fact" in the brain, because even if the precise source isn't remembered, the impression that it came from a trusted source may well do so.

Corrections to the public record are always important. I'm proud to be a part of a community that has this as one of its cornerstones.

Another cornerstone of the Daily Kos community is the comments written by its members—over twenty-three thousand in the past twenty-four hours. There were excellent examples to be found, so you can check out nominations from those of your fellow Kossacks who were around to read them in the past 24 hours.

If you saw any great comments that are not mentioned here, please link to them in your own comments below. The address of that mailbox:
