A live boy or a dead woman

Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 09:13:42 PM PDT

It's now his to lose.  Each day more news comes out showing momentum in Obama's favor and McCain floundering around with his teleprompter, shuffling his staff around while Obama enjoys enthusiastic crowds and promises the largest outdoor campaign speech probably in modern history when he accepts the nomination in Denver.  Has Obama moved a bit Right on some issues?  Maybe.  Did he miss the boat on providing leadership on FISA? Probably.  But is he still a master champion of Democratic, Progressive causes?  Absolutely.  Absolutely.  Responsible withdrawal from Iraq?  Check.  Investments in Energy Independence Research and Development?  Check.  Investments in Schools, Infrastructure, Health Care?  Check, check and check.  Repeal of tax cuts for the top 3% incomes?  Check.  McCain.....crickets.... But wait... what's that ??  A scandal?  A misstep?  Could it happen...

He's shown again and again whether it was Reverend Wright or the flag pin, that he can get rid of the bad news cycle and pretty quickly.  He's shown again and again that he can up the ante with big PR moves, Obama Fellows, Big Speeches, Invitations to dinner and to write the platform, and massive fundraising expertise.  He's proving that he can organize voters maybe even better than Rove mobilized evangelicals...

So where's the proverbial dead girl or live boy...... I'm not sure where they are .. It almost seems too good to be true.  The only tension in this race so far is a tension fabricated by the media to sell advertising because by any stretch of the imagination, Obama is looking at a 30 to 50 electoral college vote win (not to mention popular votes).  If he chooses the right VP, someone with charisma and the appeal of the right kind of experience ie. Tom Kaine, Al Gore, ... dare I say Colin Powell, he wins.

McCain is fussing around with re-branding... shuffling his deck.  Wooing 527s in the backroom.  Trying to sound like he understands economics.  Etc.

There are only 4 real months left in this thing.  So let's for a moment remember what things looked like 4 months before he sewed up the nomination - December 2007.  He was polling behind John Edwards in many states.  Hillary seemed like she was ready for a coronation.  The Clintons were a household brand name with some of the best so called experts in politics working for them.  Obama was an underdog, a novice, green and inexperienced.  Yet, he usurped the Clintons within 90 days, raising more money and branding a new Hope/Change brand that turned the politics of the Democratic Party upside down.  And, he did it in 90 days.

Today, 120 days out, he's in the driver's seat.  His hardest issue is how to maintain the momentum and keep control of the evergrowing bandwagon.  Tacking to the Center a bit while maintaining a clear left lane has been tough, but still he's handling it with a fire in the belly and often with a very graceful touch.

It's hard to believe we're where we are.  We're poised to have a Democratic revolution in American politics.  Strong majorities in both houses of Congress, the White House, the chance to name at least 1 or 2 of the next USSC justices.  It's truly amazing.

Please let's focus on the next 120 days.  Let's support our guy 110%.  Let's make this happen.

No he's not G-d or the new messiah.  He's not a purist.  He's a politician that has to deal with the whole United States of America and all the issues therein.  But he's the best thing we've had in a long time.  Unless there's something he's not telling us.  Unless he pulls an Elliot Spitzer (G-d forbid), and has the proverbial dead girl or live boy in his bed, we're in tremendous shape to really be the change we want to be.
