With all the talk about highly contested House seats this November, I thought I'd shed some light on why MD-1 is going to be a closer race than pundits think it will be...
Lets review:
Everyone.
- Wayne Gilchrest voted for President Bush's tax cuts, and continues to support making them permanent. This includes the tax cuts for the top 1% of Americans.
Labor.
- He voted for Bush's ban on overtime pay.
- He voted against worker protections and for an increase in foreign workers in 1998.
- Rep. Gilchrest voted AGAINST the Watt Amendment to H.R. 3736 (an H-1B bill) that would have forbidden U.S. firms from using temporary foreign workers to replace Americans.
- He is not supported by the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, or SEIU, having voted in their favor less than 26% of the time... TOTAL.
Veterans
- Wayne Gilchrest, along with 214 Members of Congress, voted for the FY04 budget resolution, which cut veterans' programs by $25 billion over the next ten years (H. Con. Res. 95).
Women
- Wayne Gilchrest voted to ban late term abortions
This is in response to some people the other day who mentioned, truthfully, that Wayne Gilchrest has run virtually unscathed through the last several elections and holds his seat very strongly in the District. They are correct, he has won by virtually no contest in the past, but he also has never to deal with his support for President Bush's platform in the past. These will be among the many, many issues of this election, and the choice will be clear.
