At the end of May, drchelo visited Chicago. She, dmsilev & I went on a Chicago Architectural Foundation (CAF) River Cruise, and then went for lunch. Yes, it took me a long time to edit the photos.
Meet drchelo & dmsilev (in a rare photo by Sheddhead, where dmsilev isn't lying on his back, taking a photo of the ceiling.)
Join me over the jump for other Chicago Treasures we saw that day.
The Trump Tower is nearly completed.
For Sale (possibly): The Tribune Tower.
The Equitable Building (just to the south of the Trib.)
This was originally called The Jeweler's Building had elevators that brought the jeweler's cars from ground floor to the floor of their offices. Supposedly the restaurant in the dome, called the Stratosphere Lounge, was a speakeasy run by Capone.
Marina City.
The last of Mies Van der Rohe's buildings: The IBM Building.
Leo Burnett Building.
Merchandise Mart (once owned by the Kennedy family)
Check out the unfortunate signs for the even more unfortunately named convention (the bust - well, head - is along a line of famous merchants like Ward & Wannamaker.)
The Boeing Building (I think it used to be the Morton Building)
This was a cold storage building, and took months to defrost. It's been converted to condos.
The walls are pretty thick.
Part of the old Montgomery Ward catalog building. (Workers wore rollerskates to get around.)
Of the newer buildings, the reflections on 333 W Wacker make it one of my favorites.
No worries, since the Dave Mathew's Band wasn't in town.
The building shaped like a chair (right after the bridge) is Lyric Opera.
Some buildings make it easier to get a corner office, than others.
River City on the right, and Sears Tower (the tall one.)
I have a friend who enjoys vacations in the Swissotel - I want to stay in a room in one of the angles.
From near the lake, we could see the roof of the Hotel Intercontinental. And the odd shape of the roof was - of course! to attach dirigibles.
And what, you ask, did drchelo and dmsilev enjoy for lunch?
Due's stuffed pizza.
Yum. (And now, I'd better have something not-pizza-ish.)
