Having supported someone who has criticized Kerry a lot during the primary, I have gotten used to thinking of Kerry negatively. Now that we're into the general election campaign, I do support him but only because I support the Democratic platform. Unfortunately, that's not enough. I encounter many people who don't think in terms of party platforms but choose to vote based on whether they like an individual. For those people, I have to present Kerry as admirable in personal terms. I need help with talking points.
Here's one thing that especially needs to be addressed.
-Kerry's perceived flip-flopping and inability to choose a position and stick with it.
-Kerry's cowardice in choosing to do only what's politically safe and unpopular.
To counter these two, first I need someone to argue (with many specific examples to be convincing) that Kerry has been basically consistent in his positions and that the times he had a change of heart were motivated by personal conviction and not political opportunism. Second, I need stories about political issues that Kerry went on a limb to advocate for, with examples showing how he fought for them when the causes were unpopular. That would make look like a principled and brave legislator.
I hope people can help me. I have been cynical about Kerry before but will not be anymore. Republicans will try their best to smear anyway and my mission for now is to counter the media's distortions within my social network by convinving my acquintances to view Kerry in the best possible light.
