Dean has prided himself on being "the only white candidate to walk about race in front of white audiences" and wants to break down the racial barriers Republicans have erected to appeal to "guys with confederate flags on their pickup trucks". Well now he has his chance.
The Council of Conservative Citizens have written a public letter to Dean asking him to speak at one of their meetings. You can read it here:

This puts Dean in a difficult situation, but ultimately, if he has no prior commitments, he should attend the event and speak to the group. If Dean went in front of a racist group (having casually looked at the page, I can't find anything blatantly racist there. Offensive and questionable maybe, but nothing that constitutes hate speech. If I missed something, feel free to point it out) and actually seriously stated his beliefs on issues like race and made a good faith effort to communicate his message, it would be a powerful act. Furthermore, he could actually win votes from these people if he didn't talk down to them.
Sure, Dean would be in dangerous territory if he spoke to the group (the most dangerous criticism being that this is what he thinks the south is really like. A pile of bullshit that anyone down here in Texas who's seen Dean speak [like me] could easily see through), but the potential benefits are huge. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass.
