Excuse me, but I need to get something off my chest.
In two days, two recommended diaries highlighted mainstream media talking heads, in the form of Shep Smith at Fox News and Norah O'Donnell at MSNBC deliver some pretty blistering critiques of the torture policy propogated by the Bush Administion. I admired the diaries, and I'm not calling out the diarists...
but I am going to call out the mainstream media.
Oh yes, outside of the loons of Hannity, et. al., now many in the mainstream media are showing their absolute indignation (HARUMPH! HARUMPH!) after the Obama administration released the memos to show what we all already knew: the United States of America tortured prisoners, and tried to cook up legal justification for it by calling it enhanced interrogation techniques.
Well, welcome to the club Shep and Norah and whoever else. But you are seven years too late in your outrage.
Where were you this was actually going on? Where were you when the evidence was seeping out? Shoot, where were you when the Bush administration basically admitted they were doing it?
Silent as lambs, you were.
Even in the face of Abu Gharib, while you, the media, seemed mildly upset, you ended up accepting the Bush administration explanation of, well, that was just a few bad apples in the bunch doing that. Nothing to see here.
Never mind that it was friggin' POLICY by that point. Never mind there was far wider abuses going on.
You, the media, entrusted with out airwaves and supposedly the chief defenders of the First Amendment, never spoke up once. Never did the real digging. Never blared this as your top story. You just went along.
Don't pretend this is nothing new. I mean, watching that O'Donnell interview with Liz Cheney, I was nodding my head when she said something to the effect of "Well, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone..."
Yeah, no kidding. No wonder the loons are taken aback. They've been buddy buddy with you media types for years, and suddenly, NOW you decide to do your job?
No thanks. I won't be cheerleading. And I don't believe in revisionism.
You failed the American people. Even moreso than our government did.
And for that, you should be ashamed. Period.
