WAYWO is a continuing series about what Kossacks are working on {mostly crafts but we're flexible and (at least in my case) inquisitive, so don't be shy about sharing}, usually posted around this time on Sundays. A Yahoo group includes a mailing list to announce when the diary is posted and a schedule of hosts. Feel free to sign up for future weeks - all crafters from all crafts welcome. (If you don't want to sign up for the Yahoo group {it is only one or two emails a week!}, email me and I'll add you to the schedule.)
First of all, Happy Father's Day to any daddy crafters out there! And happy first day of summer to the rest.
Most of you know that I am a knitter, crocheter, and spinner. For many years now, I have been entranced by fiber, though I've not been particularly inventive. It's all been done before, but it's wrapped itself around my heart and intertwined itself into my life.
Yesterday, my spinning group met, and our newest potential member bought a Kundert drop spindle, and began to learn to spin. She made a a very nice first mini-skein. It was lumpy at first, true, but she was able to even it out quite amazingly for a beginner.
One of our two male group members was there with his beautiful professional quality wheel; he spent the time spinning some mixed fibers he'd overdyed just for fun. Interestingly, they matched the green color of his drive wheel.
I mostly abandoned the group, though I came in here & there to spin for a few minutes; I'd brought some gorgeous white merino and some angora bunny fiber to have carded together. My friend, who works in the yarn/fiber shop where we meet, offered to card them on the electric carder. Who was I to say no? But when I did spin, I was spinning the batt of kid mohair that I got for my birthday. It's in purple and reds, with a little sparkle added. When I finish it, I'll post pictures.
Here's my last finished yarn - spun, plied, and dyed by me:
And here's what it looked like in the dye pan:
