As reported by TPM yesterday evening, Rep. Brad Miller's office received a creepy phone call that may have crossed the line to a direct threat on the North Carolina Congressman's life:
"The call to the D.C. office was, 'Miller could lose his life over this,'" said Canipe. "Our staffer took it so seriously, he confirmed what the guy was saying. He said, 'Sir is that a threat?' and at that time our staffer was getting the phone number off caller ID and turning it over to the Capitol Police."
Canipe confirmed the call for Daily Kos and added, "We didn't have any large townhall style events scheduled anyway, but we're going ahead with our planned meetings. Congressman Miller is interested in hearing from all his constituents, and this call certainly won't interrupt that recess schedule."
Canipe also said that calls complaining about health care reform noticeably increased in frequency and tone beginning "about a week ago," which is incidentally right about the time screamers began showing up at political events all over the country. Other DC offices, most of them democratic, have reportedly received similar flurries of angry calls over the past few days, but there are no published reports that other death threats have been received.
