The Republican push to tie Harry Reid's remarks about President Obama to those of Trent Lott's praise of Strom Thurmond, has confused John Cornyn (R-TX):
"What this is about is his hypocrisy and the hypocrisy of folks on the other side when Trent Lott said something that was far more innocuous than the racially tinged comments that Senator Reid made," Cornyn said, pushing the GOP’s "double standard" talking point on Reid.
Psst, John, you're just supposed to be pushing a talking point, not defending segregation.
And just in case Cornyn and his fellow Republicans forgot, Lott was forced to resign after saying:
I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years.
... a man who ran as a segregationist, once declaring that:
I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigra race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches.
As Josh Marshall pointed out:
Talking about racism does not make you racist; advocating racism does.
So, when will the Republican party stop advocating racism?
