The year has just ended, so it must be time to catch up on the Daily Kos prolific commenters for 2009. We have the final three months to cover; the first nine were chronicled in this diary.
Some stalwarts continue to comment at astonishing rates, some new ones have joined the fray with a will (and a way), and some have left the site for other pastures. Who has done what will be revealed on the far side of the jump.
The Prolific Commenters diaries were started by plf515 in 2007; I took over in 2008. The idea was to list the people who post at least 1,000 comments in a month, with additional yearly and other summation diaries. I sometimes include them in a Top Comments diary, if the scheduling is favorable—these folks are tops at comment frequency—and sometimes run them separately. The stars aligned today.
The table below, for the final quarter of 2009, will be ordered from highest to lowest for the most recent of the months, and each will include all users who made at least 1,000 comments in one or more of the months. Three Kosssacks even wrote that many comments in every month of 2009: Gooserock, Texas Blue Dot, and Yasuragi. Now that's prolific.
The table columns are user name, user ID, the three months in the quarter from most recent to earliest, the total for the fourth quarter, and for all of 2009. All totals reflect comments made on diaries posted in the listed time period, even if those comments were made after the end of the month. Similarly, comments on earlier diaries made during the period are ignored. It all evens out, and makes stats gathering feasible.

Final notes: Active commenters were thicker on the ground in the final three months after an anemic third quarter. Both October and November had 33 commenters who had at least a thousand comments, up from 6 in September and 23 and 28 in August and July respectively, while December was up to 39, almost back to January's level of 46. We have 64 names on the list for the final quarter, up from 36 in the third quarter, though still down from 70 in the first quarter.
Once upon a time I would include search strings in these diaries to allow readers to check their own totals. Each time, unfortunately, the search server would crash due to the number of people who were curious. Tonight, I'll be happy to check stats for anyone who asks in the comments. (I may already have done so, if you've appeared on these lists in the past, or come close.) But if you want to check yourself, you'll have to figure out how on your own. ct was getting tired of restarting the search server every time I ran one of these diaries, and I was getting tired of writing him to apologize and let him know the server was down again.
I should also mention that the final column, while giving totals for all of 2009, doesn't show everyone who was prolific over the entire year. A future diary will list all the Kossacks who wrote at least ten thousand comments over the course of 2009.
If you know of anyone you think I've missed, no matter which month, please let me know. I can't be everywhere, or test everyone. Do note that all my searches include the "not cid=0" string to omit the non-existent zeroth comment created in the index for all diaries. I'll update the diary as I discover commenters who should have been included.
For the December, quarter, and full-year figures, the posted number will be somewhat inflated by duplicates caused by overlapping indices in the most recent week of comments. To put all commenters on an even playing field, the figures for December and the full-year were obtained this afternoon, so the data comes from the same indices. Once a comment is over a week old, it goes into the permanent index and should no longer be duplicated. Search counts each of these duplicates in its totals, but will only ever display a single instance. (If you've ever wondered why when you ask for 50 per page in a search you sometimes only see 45, it's because of these overlaps—your search had five duplicate entries that weren't displayed in that particular group of 50.)

The emails from Kossacks today arrived in respectable, if not strictly prolific, numbers—and the majority of said comments arrived in the hour before the 9:30pm Eastern Time deadline. Many thanks to all who wrote! The address of our mailbox for top comments submissions remains:
TopComments AT gmail DOT com
(change " AT " to "@" and " DOT " to ".")
Anyone can send great comments to our address. Be sure to include the direct link to a comment—the URL—which is available from that comment's date/time; we need that to find your choice. Please always include your Daily Kos user name in the body of your message, so we can credit you properly. As I say every time, both link and username are important. (One person forgot the link. Tsk.) If you send a writeup with the link, we are able to include that, too, though we reserve the right to edit if necessary; should you only provide the link, then you have to take whatever writeup we create...and we can be extremely creative. Today, I was slightly creative in the punctuation department, but that was about it.
