I finally read Bait and Switch by Barbara Ehrenreich, and in light of all this guest worker business, it's all the more poignant. It's so horrific to think of a new class of indentured servants, trying so hard to make it when they don't even understand the rules.
Barbara Ehrenreich, a well-educated and savvy American citizen, had serious trouble making ends meet when she understood how to play the game. Now imagine that story if you don't even know English. That scares me so badly for these people, and also for what the idea says about our leadership, such as it is.
In what universe does this idea make sense? The idea of profit as the main goal and motivation of American politics has brought us nothing but disaster, and this is just one more log on the fire. Thank God above the crazy people dropped the idea of making these folks felons, but something compassionate and practical has to be done. Anyone got any ideas?
