I wonder about tomorrow's press conference.
I heard Ceci Connely say over the weekend, the reason Bush disappeared last week was because Karen Hughes believes you lead with good news and then address the bad news when answering the press. History bears this out, the last formal press conferences or press availabilities in the WH press room have been either on short notice or after a WH victory(capturing Sadamm).
Last week there was no good news, so Bush stayed hidden.
So that begs the question, Why the press conference now?
- Are they scared about the ASHCROFT testimony before the 9/11 commision & don't want his testimony to dominate the news cycle
- Afraid of sending 10,000 more troops to Iraq, thinking it needs to be explained
- Maybe the PDB story has caused internal polling to collapse, & feel they need to stop the bleeding
- Here's the wild card--Is it possible they've caught Bin-Laden or found WMD's & he's going to announce it...It would be in keeping with waiting & using good news to blunt bad news
Maybe we'll get lucky & he'll follow LBJ and announce he won't run for re-election.
