When the verdict came out in Citizens United V. Federal Election Commission you would expect Justice
Anthony Kennedy (unrelated to the prominent Kennedy family) to be the first 1st amendment supporter,
even for huge foreign corporations. The last thing you'd expect from the Reagan appointed justice is for
him to refuse to allow The Dalton School of Manhattan to publish an article in the school newspaper The
Daltonian about his very own public visit, until his office “tidied up” the article.
He was faced with much criticism. Frank D. LoMonte of the Student Press Law Center, for example:
“These are people who are old enough to vote,” he said. “If you’re old enough to drive a tank, you’re old
enough to write a headline.”
Kevin Slick, The Daltonian's faculty advisor said we "believed we could not publish anything without the
approval of Justice Kennedy”.
All this is the very last thing you would expect from the same guy who wrote the majority opinion that
allows foreign corperation to throw millions, if not billions of dollars into America's elections and policy
decisions.
This is more than shameful.
