Convenes: 10:00am
Resume consideration of the House Message on HR1299, the legislative vehicle for the Travel Promotion legislation.
There will be no roll call votes prior to 4pm on Thursday in order to accommodate the Health Care Summit with the President.
We will continue to work on an agreement to consider a bill to extend for 30 days certain expiring tax provisions. Senators will be notified when any agreement is reached.
As a reminder, Senator Reid filed cloture on the Travel Promotion legislation today. Under the rules, the cloture vote would occur Friday one hour after the Senate convenes. However, we hope to reach an agreement to have that vote tomorrow.
What's happening on the Hill today? WHO CARES! HEALTH CARE SUMMIT! AIIIIEEEE!!!!
Yes, it's the day of the big bipartisan health care summit, which I'm told will include lunch. How about Evan Bayh, just tearin' it up on his way out of DC! Bipartisan lunch, FTW!
But despite these fabulous advances in dining diplomacy, there is business at hand on the Hill today. And it's probably a good day to have eyes drawn elsewhere, as the House undertakes to authorize intelligence operations, renew the USA PATRIOT Act, and pass some kind of bill full of tax provision extensions that I don't even have any idea what's in it, which rarely makes me feel good. Probably not a red letter day for progressives, whatever that whole "red letter" is supposed to be about.
The Senate, meanwhile, dutifully performs its task of making people look away, by continuing its work on a tourism promotion bill, and probably playing a lot of classical music for C-SPAN2 viewers. But just to keep things interesting, yes, there's a cloture motion that's filed on the bill. Once again, that's more about the same number of cloture motions between January 2009 and today as between World War I and the moon landing. It once took 50 years to get the same number of cloture votes as we've had in just over one year with this Republican minority.
Full committee schedule appears below.
UPDATE: Before I go, here are some Tweet-sized morning talking point reminders on health care and reconciliation:
- The same law (the Budget Act) that protects reconciliation from filibuster also protects the annual budget resolution. Is the annual passage of a federal budget the "nuclear option?"
- Yes, reconciliation is protected from filibuster BY LAW. That's why it's not the same as the nuclear option.
- If you've ever gotten coverage through COBRA, you have reconciliation to thank for it. Reconciliation is the R in COBRA.
